We are proud to announce that a jury found in favor of our client, Mr. Elijah Jackson, a D.C. man who was brutally assaulted by members of the Metropolitan Police Department in 2015.

After a week of trial and deliberation, the jury awarded Mr. Jackson $1 million in compensatory damages for the violation of his civil rights and the injuries he suffered.

This verdict sends a clear message that police misconduct will not be tolerated in our community.

We thank the jury for their service and justice, and we commend Mr. Jackson for his courage and resilience.

Jackson suffered a broken nose and herniated disc during his 2015 arrest. The jury found that officers used excessive force and others failed to intervene.

We're smiling because the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration's open application period for unlicensed cannabis retailers, “I-71,” began on November 1st.

This unique application period allows unlicensed operators to apply for a medical cannabis retailer or internet retailer license. We believe in supporting small businesses and expanding access to safe and legal cannabis products.

Stay tuned for the next round of applications opening in the Spring and Summer of 2024, and contact us at info@kinnermcgowan if you need help!

Attention Maryland cannabis entrepreneurs! The state has opened the first round of applications for recreational cannabis business licenses.

You have until Dec. 12 at 5 P.M. to apply for one of the 179 licenses available in various categories, such as standard or micro growers, processors, and dispensaries.

However, there are some restrictions and requirements that you need to be aware of before applying.

For example, you must be a verified social equity applicant, have a valid surety bond, and submit a comprehensive business plan.

If you need guidance on how to apply for a license, or if you have any questions about the application process, shoot us an email at [email protected].

If you are a social equity applicant seeking a cannabis license in Maryland and you have verified your social equity status online, you may be wondering what happens next. Here is a brief overview of the application process:

🗓 The Maryland Cannabis Administration (MCA) and the Office of Social Equity (OSE) will verify if you meet the eligibility criteria for being a social equity applicant. This may take up to 30 days from the date of submission.

✅ If you are verified, you will receive an email confirmation with a link to your PDF report and a link to the online application portal for the cannabis business license. You will have to complete and submit your application form, pay the fee, and provide your business plan and other documents before the deadline.

✖ If you are not verified, you will receive an email notification with a link to your PDF report. You will not be able to apply for a cannabis business license in this round. You may appeal the verification decision by contacting the OSE within 10 days of receiving the notification.

🔎 The MCA will review all the applications submitted by verified social equity applicants and conduct a lottery to select the winners of the cannabis business licenses. The lottery will be based on a random number generator and will ensure geographic diversity and fair distribution of licenses across the state. The MCA will announce the winners of the lottery on its website and notify them by email. The winners will have to complete additional steps to obtain their licenses, such as passing a background check, securing a location, and complying with local zoning and regulations.

We hope this information helps you understand the process and what to expect. If you have any questions or need assistance with your verification or application, please contact us at Kinner & McGowan.

We are a full-service cannabis consulting firm that specializes in helping social equity applicants navigate the complex regulatory landscape and achieve their business goals. We have the experience, expertise, and passion to help you succeed in the cannabis industry.

The latest report from the DC Department of Health shows that medical cannabis sales increased slightly in September, reaching $4.4 million.

However, this does not reflect the actual demand for cannabis in the District, as many consumers rely on the I-71 shops that gift w**d by purchasing a retail product or service.

The Medical Cannabis Amendment Act of 2022, which became law in March, overhauls DC’s medical cannabis program by allowing more patients to self-certify, creating new license categories and endorsements, and promoting social equity in the medical cannabis market.

The Act also provides a pathway for I-71 shops to obtain a Medical Cannabis Retailer License, allowing them to sell medical cannabis products to adults 21 or older.

We are happy to see DC’s medical cannabis industry grow and thrive, and starting on November 1, 2023, we are helping many of these unlicensed retailers transition into the regulated medical market.

If you are interested in becoming a licensed retailer, stay tuned. We can help prepare your retail application in Spring 2024 or July 2024.
