We are excited to welcome our newest summer intern, Denna Laing, to The Spinal Cord Injury Law Firm team. She graduated with an A.B. from Princeton University in 2014, where she captained the women’s ice hockey team. After graduating, she worked at the Essex
County District Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts as a Victim Witness Advocate until
sustaining a spinal cord injury while playing professional ice hockey in late 2015. Since
her injury, Laing has become an advocate for the paralysis community through her
participation in and fundraising for spinal cord injury research, as well as sharing her
journey of recovery and perspective through speaking and storytelling. In the fall of
2023, she achieved a longtime goal by entering Suffolk University Law School as a
member of the Class of 2027. While in law school, Laing has successfully completed
multiple legal internships, most recently interning for the Honorable Judge McCarthy-
Neyman of the Essex County Superior Court. In her final year of law school, she will
serve as the President of Women’s Law Association, Vice President of the Suffolk Law
Disability Alliance and a participant in Suffolk’s Legal Innovation and Technology Clinic.

During one of her very first trials, Kelley remembers a judge calling her out for not standing when everyone was told to “all rise.” It was an uncomfortable moment, but one that became an important lesson early in her career.

That experience taught her the value of preparation, communication, and making sure every detail is handled before stepping into the courtroom. Over the years, Kelley’s confidence has grown tremendously, and today she works closely with courtroom staff before every trial to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

It’s a reminder that growth often comes from the moments that challenge us the most, and those lessons can shape the kind of advocate and leader you become.

Please join us in congratulating Kelley Brooks Simoneaux on receiving the Sandra H. Robinson Women’s Caucus Award from the Trial Lawyers Association of Washington, D.C. at their Annual Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C.

Kelley was also officially sworn in as the organization’s Secretary, another incredible milestone in her continued leadership within the legal community.

As the founder of The Spinal Cord Injury Law Firm, Kelley made history as the first woman with a spinal cord injury in the United States to found and lead a law firm dedicated entirely to spinal cord injury cases. Since then, she has helped hundreds of individuals navigate life after catastrophic injury while advocating fiercely for justice.

We are so proud of Kaitlin as she takes the next step toward the bar exam and the beginning of her legal career.

During her time with our firm, she has stepped up to lead multiple projects and has been an incredible asset to our team. Watching her grow through law school, gain confidence, and feel empowered to advocate for everything she needs to fully access the world has been inspiring to witness.

We are proud to share that our founder, Kelley Brooks Simoneaux, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the DC Trial Lawyers Association setting her on the path to become President of the organization.

This milestone reflects not only Kelley’s leadership, but the mission that drives our firm every day. When Kelley moved to the DC area after practicing in Atlanta, she intentionally built relationships within the trial lawyer community, knowing that connection and collaboration would be critical to serving clients at the highest level. It became the foundation for building this firm and expanding advocacy for individuals with spinal cord injuries and catastrophic harm.
