Two former corrections officers have pled guilty to conspiracy charges, related to their attempts to obstruct the investigation into the beating of an inmate at Roxbury (MD) Correctional Facility in 2008. A total of five officers have now pled guilty and apparently many others are still awaiting trial. http://ow.ly/jQO1r

The death of a 22 year-old prison inmate last week at the Maryland Correctional Institution - Hagerstown has been ruled a homicide. No suspects have been charged at this point, while the investigation continues. http://ow.ly/jCSUD

A VA Sheriff has come up with a new way to ease prison overcrowding -- he simply hired a private contractor to construct three buildings in the Chesapeake area, allegedly without obtaining proper permits, public input, nor prior consent from the Board of Corrections. After Judiciary Committee approval, the MD State House of Representatives is expected to vote on repealing the death penalty in the coming weeks. The MD Senate has already voted in favor of repealing the death penalty, but even if the House also votes in favor of the measure, it may still come up for a referendum vote this November. http://ow.ly/iKxmG
