Perspective from a criminal defense attorney:

So are we done with the death penalty yet?

We can get the conviction wrong. We can get the ex*****on wrong.

203 people sentenced to death have been exonerated since 1973, and one major study estimated that at least 4.1% of people sentenced to death were wrongfully convicted.

And then there’s what happened to Christa Pike.

I’m not saying she’s innocent. I’m saying these are two separate problems with the death penalty. And the Eighth Amendment is supposed to protect against both.

We can get the conviction wrong. We can get the ex*****on wrong. Why are we still doing this?
