Cannabis has a credit problem. Could one loan help change that?

In the latest new NCIA member blog, attorneys at Cogent Law Group explore how a loan-loss reserve could help reduce lender risk and open the door to more private lending for cannabis businesses.

The proposal focuses on New York’s small outdoor farmers and a potential test case that could demonstrate how a modest public guarantee might unlock private capital, without creating another state-run lending program.

The accompanying white paper takes a deeper look at the legal and regulatory framework, what previous programs got wrong, and what a workable approach could look like.

Legal cannabis is better.

NCIA Board Chair Adam Rosenberg makes the case in a letter published by The Washington Post.

Legalization means moving cannabis out of the illicit market and into a regulated system with age verification, testing, labeling, and accountability. It has also created more than 400,000 jobs and generated more than $28 billion in state tax revenue since 2014.

We can acknowledge the challenges of legalization while recognizing that regulation provides a better path than prohibition.

BREAKING: Today, the Trump Administration officially directed the Attorney General to reclassify cannabis as a Schedule III substance.

This decision reflects what patients, medical professionals, and millions of Americans have long understood: cannabis has accepted medical use and does not belong alongside the most dangerous controlled substances.
