CLADC is a nonprofit, non-partisan, Christian legal services organization that provides free and reduced-cost legal services in various areas of poverty law to low-income and homeless people from a faith-based perspective. Founded in 2006, CLADC sees an enormous opportunity to connect the vast legal resources from among the Washington, D.C. legal community with the immense need for legal services from among the city’s poorer residents. Motivated and guided by our Christian faith, we believe to whom much is given, much is expected. As such, this is but one way for us to respond by using the talents that we have been given to serve the poor and needy among us.

🎉 Great News for Access to Justice in DC! 🎉

Earlier this week, the DC Council voted to fully restore funding for the Access to Justice Initiative in the FY2027 budget, bringing funding back to nearly $31.8 million, which is the current 2026 level.

Just weeks ago, the proposed budget included devastating 84% cuts that would have dramatically reduced access to critical legal services for thousands of DC residents. Thanks to the leadership of the DC Council and the collective advocacy of legal aid organizations, community partners, volunteers, supporters, and concerned residents, access to justice remains a priority for our city.

This restoration means that organizations like Christian Legal Aid of DC can continue providing free legal services to individuals and families facing challenges related to housing, family stability, record sealing, estate planning, and more.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who contacted Councilmembers, shared our message, and stood with us throughout this process. Your voices made a difference.

While the budget must still complete Mayoral and Congressional review, this week’s vote is a significant victory for justice, equity, and the thousands of District residents who rely on legal aid services each year.

There is encouraging news in the fight to protect the DC Access to Justice Initiative.

The original budget proposal would have reduced funding by approximately 84%, from $31.4 million in FY26 to just $4.9 million in 2027.

Thanks to advocacy from community members, legal aid organizations, volunteers, and supporters, DC Council members have committed to find the funding to fully restore the funding to current levels.

This update is worth celebrating but nothing is guaranteed yet.

The DC Council is scheduled to hold its second vote on the draft budget. We encourage supporters to continue reaching out to their DC Council members and urging them to work toward full restoration of Access to Justice funding.

Every day, legal aid organizations help DC residents facing housing instability, family crises, criminal record barriers, and other life-changing legal challenges. Access to justice should not depend on a person's ability to pay.
