Let’s have an honest, uncomfortable conversation.

If an average citizen enters an encounter with a pre-engineered "plan to kill," the law calls that premeditated homicide. It carries a life sentence in prison (or the death penalty). But when a police department trains its officers with that exact philosophy? The system calls it "qualified immunity."

The illusion of "Law and Order" is cracking, and we are looking at a system that protects the structure over the neighbor.

When my son asked me what Juneteenth was, I gave him the official answer.

But the older I get, the more uncomfortable I become with easy answers.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom in America has always been more complicated than a proclamation. The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery—but left an exception. More than 160 years later, we still wrestle with what that exception means.

From Angola Prison in Louisiana to prison labor, from Martin Luther King Jr.'s time on a Georgia work farm to today's debates over voting rights and representation, the unfinished work of freedom continues.

Perhaps Juneteenth is not simply a celebration of what happened.

Perhaps it is an invitation to ask what remains unfinished.
