As we reach the midpoint of the year, it is a good time to pause and ask: Does your estate plan still reflect your current wishes and circumstances?

Here are a few important questions to consider:

🔹 Have you experienced a major life change? Marriage, divorce, remarriage, the birth or adoption of a child or grandchild, a death in the family, purchasing a new home, starting a new business, or retirement can all impact how your plan operates.

🔹 Do your decision-makers not align with your wishes anymore? Your executor, trustee, and powers of attorney should be individuals who are still willing and able to serve when needed.

🔹 Could your assets and beneficiary designations use a quick review? Retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and property titles should align with your will or trust to avoid unintended outcomes.

🔹 Has it simply been a while since you checked in on your plan? Even without major life changes, estate plans should still be reviewed periodically to remain current with evolving laws and aligned with your long-term goals.

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, then do not hesitate to contact us to schedule a review of your estate plan. I am here to help you keep everything aligned and up to date.

Estate planning is not only about distributing assets. It is also about ensuring your loved ones are well-positioned and protected. Taking proactive steps now can help create clarity and reduce complications during a challenging time.

There are several important steps that can help safeguard your family and your estate:

🔹 Creating or updating a will that clearly directs how estate assets should be used to satisfy outstanding debts.
🔹 Establishing appropriate trusts to help safeguard certain assets.
🔹 Reviewing beneficiary designations on life insurance and retirement accounts, which may allow certain assets to pass outside of probate and avoid being used to satisfy estate debts, depending on state law.
🔹 Evaluating and reducing high-interest or unsecured debt during your lifetime.

Thoughtful planning today can provide stability and peace of mind tomorrow. If you would like to review your estate plan or discuss strategies to protect your loved ones, contact me to schedule a consultation.

While major assets often get the most attention, personal items like heirlooms, furniture, or jewelry can hold deep sentimental value and lead to conflict if not clearly addressed. Without a clear plan:

🔹Unclear distribution can create confusion between family members.
🔹Sentimental items may not end up with the right person.
🔹Small oversights run the risk of creating emotional rifts within your family.

It can be a good idea to use a personal property memorandum to clearly outline who should receive which items, while keeping your will easy to update.

If you have questions about your current estate plan or would like to schedule a review, do not hesitate to reach out. I am here to help you.

Estate planning is not just about what happens after you are gone; it also covers what happens if you cannot make decisions for yourself.

Without valid, updated health care directives, your loved ones may face delays or legal complications, medical care could be postponed, and your wishes may not be followed accurately.

For this reason, it is important to review your health care directive regularly and ensure it includes a health care proxy (also known as a medical power of attorney) that complies with your state’s laws.

If you need help reviewing or updating your health care directive, give me a call. I am here to support you.

Naming a primary beneficiary is an important step, but it is not enough on its own. If that person is unable or unwilling to inherit your assets and no backup plan is in place, you risk:

🔹Your assets going through probate.
🔹The distribution of assets not reflecting your wishes.
🔹Your plan lacking the flexibility life demands.

With this in mind, it can be a good idea to name alternative beneficiaries and include contingency clauses to keep your plan aligned and your assets protected, even when life changes.

If you are unsure whether your estate plan is flexible enough, now is a good time to review it. Contact me today to get started.

Today, much of what we own lives online, including:

✅ Bank accounts
✅ Email addresses
✅ Digital photos
✅ Social media accounts
✅ Cryptocurrency

However, if these assets are not listed in your estate plan, they can go unaccounted for, resulting in your loved ones not having legal access to retrieve them. With that in mind, it is important to keep an up-to-date list of your digital assets and login information in a secure location, and appoint a digital executor to make managing these assets easier.

Many older plans do not account for digital assets. If you are unsure how to incorporate them in your estate plan, contact me today. I am here to help.
