If you think you'll ask about that family heirloom someday... think again.

Picture the grandfather clock that's been standing in your parents' or grandparents' home for as long as you can remember.

You've heard it chime a thousand times. You recognize every detail. You might even know exactly where you'd put it in your own home.

But here's what you might NOT know.

Where did it come from? Was it a wedding gift? Did someone save for years to buy it? Why was it important enough to keep all these years?

The object often lasts longer than the story.

And when the person who knows that story is no longer there to tell it, you may be left with a beautiful heirloom and a lot of unanswered questions.

The good news? You don't need hours of interviews or a complicated family history project.

Start with three simple questions:

🕰️ Where did this come from?

🕰️ Who gave it to you?

🕰️ Why did you keep it?

Then capture their answers, in their own words if you can.

🔥 FIRESIDE STORIES | One Passport. A Lifetime of Stories.

What looks like an old, expired passport might actually hold the story of how an entire family’s future changed.

In 1971, a young boy left southern Georgia for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He learned Portuguese, experienced a new culture, and began a lifelong connection to the world beyond the United States.

Decades later, that experience has shaped not only his life but his children's lives, too.

And it all started with a little passport featuring a childhood photo. 📖

This Family History Month, we're sharing another Artifcts Fireside Story to remind you that family history isn't just about where you came from. It's about the experiences that made you who you are.

That first passport is now preserved in an Artifct, along with the memories and meaning behind it.

You remember the stories. The holiday dinners. The people who owned these things.

But will the next generation?

Here's something worth remembering: You can preserve your family's history without keeping every family heirloom.

Before an item is gifted, donated, sold, or passed along, take the opportunity to document its story.

Photograph the details, record what you remember, and invite family members to contribute their memories in an Artifct.

The item may eventually find a new home. Its history doesn't have to disappear with it. 💚

Maybe it's a box of your children's old clothes, a quilt passed down from your grandmother, or a piece of furniture that's been in the family for generations.

You don't necessarily need it anymore, but the memories? Those are harder to part with. ❤️

🍻 A trip to Oktoberfest in 2000. A few b**r steins. And a story worth passing down.

Welcome to the very first episode of Artifcts Fireside Stories with Matt! 🔥

In 2000, Matt found himself celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, with friends from the American Embassy.

There were enormous b**r steins, plenty of chicken, servers somehow carrying eight b**rs at once, and memories that still make him smile more than 25 years later.

Those b**r steins have been sitting in his house ever since. But here's the thing: Without the story, they're just a couple of old mugs.

Now, thanks to Artifcts, his kids will know where they came from, who he was with, and why he kept them all these years.

And who knows? Maybe he'll return in 2030 to add another to his collection! 🍻

You remember her making it every holiday. The handwritten changes in the margins.

How she never measured that one ingredient, and somehow got it right every time.

Those details are part of your family history, too.

A recipe card can stay in the family for generations. The memories behind it need someone to tell them.

When she was little, she loved going through her mother’s jewelry box. Among the familiar pieces was a delicate jade necklace, tucked safely in the back. It looked different from everything else, and it always fascinated her.

She can’t remember her mom wearing it. Yet her mom kept it safe for years.

Now that she’s inherited it, she wishes she could ask: Who gave it to you? Was it for a special occasion? Did you bring it home from a trip?

One day, she’ll pass the necklace to her own daughter. She can share her childhood memories of admiring it, even though its earlier story remains a mystery.
