Thinking about leasing out your horse or leasing one for yourself? A clear, well‑written horse lease agreement can make all the difference for Virginia horse owners.

Here are a few essentials every lease should cover:

• How the horse may be used, including any limits on showing, training, or travel
• Who is responsible for daily care, boarding, farrier work, and routine maintenance
• How costs are allocated, including feed, board, insurance, and unexpected expenses
• Who may make veterinary decisions in an emergency and how those decisions are communicated
• Termination terms, including notice requirements and how the horse is returned
• How liability is allocated to protect both the owner and the lessee

I work with horse owners throughout Hunt Country, Virginia, and I see how much more smoothly leases run when expectations are clear from the start.

If you have questions about drafting or reviewing a horse lease agreement, I would be glad to help.

Running a barn is more than caring for horses — it’s managing people, schedules, and expectations. That’s where clear, written client policies make all the difference.

At CLR Law, PLLC, we help equine businesses protect themselves with policies that outline how scheduling works, what happens with cancellations, when late fees apply, and how safety and visitor rules are handled. Clear guidelines around horse care expectations also help prevent misunderstandings and keep everyone on the same page.

When these details are spelled out, your operations run smoother, your clients know exactly what to expect, and your business is better protected.

With peak season approaching, now is a great time to review your policies and make sure they reflect how you actually run your barn. Need help tightening things up? I'm here to support your equine business.

Waivers can be powerful tools in equine law, but they aren’t magic. In Virginia, clear communication about risks, solid facility policies, and true informed consent matter just as much as the signature itself.

If you run a barn, training program, or host events, make sure riders and families understand what they’re agreeing to and how your safety practices work day to day.

I help Virginia barns and trainers review and update their agreements so they actually protect your business and reflect how you operate. Want a second look at your waivers? I'm here to help.

Estate planning isn’t just about deciding who receives your assets—it’s also about who has the authority to manage them and how those decisions play out over time. That difference between ownership and control can be easy to miss, especially when trusts and fiduciaries are part of the conversation.

As a concierge attorney serving Hunt Country Virginia, I help clients build life and legacy plans that reflect their goals and protect what matters most. If you’re unsure how trusts, fiduciaries, or asset control fit into your estate plan, I’m here to guide you.

Choosing the right people to support your estate plan is just as important as the documents themselves. The executor (called a "Personal Representative" in Virginia) and financial power of attorney play key roles in ensuring your wishes are carried out smoothly.

As a concierge attorney serving Hunt Country, Virginia, I help clients think through these decisions with clarity and confidence so their life, legacy, and estate planning stay on track.

If you’re unsure whether your plan needs a refresh, let’s take a look together. Your future deserves thoughtful care.

Buying or selling a horse is exciting, but it is also a major legal transaction. That is why we always encourage horse owners in Virginia to put the terms in writing before money or horses change hands.

A clear sales agreement helps everyone understand the essentials: the horse’s full identification, the purchase price, how and when payment will be made, and any health conditions or disclosures that should be on the table from the start.

A written agreement also sets expectations around trial periods, what happens if the horse is injured or becomes ill before delivery, and who carries the risk during that time. These details, and many more, protect both buyers and sellers and help avoid disputes later.

If you are navigating a horse sale, I encourage you to share your experiences or questions. I'm here to support you and the equine community throughout Hunt Country, Virginia.

When you’re building an estate plan, choosing the right people to step into key roles is just as important as the documents themselves. Your successor trustee and your health care agent play a major part in ensuring your wishes are honored when it matters most.

Swipe to learn what each role does and how thoughtful selection can support your Life and Legacy Planning.

If you’re unsure who to choose or need guidance, I’m here to help you build a plan that truly fits your life in Hunt Country Virginia.
