In 1951, 31-year-old Henrietta Lacks entered Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for treatment of cervical cancer. During her care, doctors took samples of her tumor cells without asking for her consent a common practice at the time but one that raised profound ethical questions later.

Unlike ordinary human cells, which die after a limited number of divisions, Lacks’ cells continued to grow and divide indefinitely in the lab. Named HeLa cells (after the first two letters of her first and last names), they became the world’s first immortal human cell line.

HeLa cells have since played a vital role in modern medicine: contributing to the development of the polio vaccine, cancer treatments, in vitro fertilization, AIDS research, and even studies of COVID-19. They’ve been cloned, shared across labs, and multiplied into the billions, all while Henrietta herself remained unknown to the public for decades.

Today, Henrietta Lacks is recognized not only for her involuntary contribution to science but also as a symbol in discussions about medical ethics, patient rights, and racial injustice in healthcare. Her story reminds us that behind every discovery is a human life.
