Did you know that most states in the United States have passed some form of Equine Activity Liability Act?

Being knowledgeable about your state’s specific statute (or absence of one!) is essential to anyone who engages/participates in equine activities.

Indiana’s references an “inherent risk.” Do you know what exactly is considered an “inherent risk” of equine activities?

Handling? Riding? What about spectating?

Who exactly is considered an “equine professional” under the statute?

An attorney licensed to practice law in your specific state can walk you through these questions for a better understanding!

“We didn’t have a signed, written agreement, but I have some texts and we spoke about the parameters of the deal; yet, he/she isn’t doing what he/she promised to do.”

Sound familiar?

I hear this scenario far too often from clients and potential clients. These “handshake deals” are certainly still common in the horse industry, but they are problematic for a plethora of reasons when things go south.

Written contracts are a great tool to ensure expectations of both parties are clear from the start.
