Yesterday, I appeared before Judge Graham in Manchester. It reminded me of one of the first times I was before him in family court in New Britain, about ten years ago.

I had attempted to resolve a post-judgment dispute with my client's ex-husband through family relations. My client was his first wife. He had murdered his second wife. I tried to encourage Mr. X to sign an agreement. He wouldn't budge. So, we had to appear in front of Judge Graham to schedule our next event.

Court opened. His honor got on the bench. The marshals escorted Mr. X into the courtroom in his state issued jump suit. When the judge asked what was going to happen next, Mr. X stood up and said (in his thick, Slavic accent), "Your honor, Attorney Cervoni is a bully! He is trying to bully me into an agreement that I don't want to sign. He's a bully!"

Judge Graham said, "Mr. X, Mr. Cervoni isn't being a bully. He is just trying to help his client." I bit my tongue from asking his honor not to defend me.

After that experience, I had created a sign for my office:

"I've been called a bully by a convicted murderer in open court. That's a transcript I should have ordered."
