Tax-exempt doesn’t mean exempt from tax rules.

Nonprofits have unique responsibilities involving income, donations, employees, fundraising and more — plus additional requirements here in Maryland.

Teachers give a lot to their classrooms. Often that includes their own money.

If you’re a teacher paying out of pocket for classroom supplies, books, teaching materials, technology or other eligible expenses this school year, keep track of what you spend and save your receipts. You may be able to claim a deduction for qualifying educator expenses when you file your taxes.

And don’t wait until tax season to figure out what you spent. Start a folder — paper or digital — for receipts now and add to it throughout the school year.

Have questions? We're always here to answer them.

The classroom is ready. The materials are out. Now we just need the students!

Soon, we’ll welcome welcome this year’s Tax Preparation class to JRJ.

Between September and November, our students will build practical tax preparation skills, expand their financial knowledge and take the first steps toward opportunities that can lead in exciting directions.

We’ve seen past graduates go on to become tax preparers, CPAs and even a tax attorney. We can’t wait to see where this class goes next!

If you didn’t grab a spot in this year’s course, keep an eye on our website and social media because we’ll be doing it again in 2027!

College students are heading back to campus — and 529 dollars may be heading out the door. 🎓

If your family is using a 529 plan to help cover education costs, remember: what you spend the money on matters.

As you withdraw money from the account, keep records showing how those dollars were spent. Tuition, required fees, books, supplies and certain other education costs can qualify for tax-free 529 withdrawals — but not every college expense does.

After the year ends, you'll generally receive Form 1099-Q showing how much was distributed from the 529 plan. Bring that form, along with your records of qualified education expenses, when it's time to prepare your taxes.

Withdraw. Spend. Document. Keeping those three steps together can make things much easier at tax time.

Good tax planning doesn't begin in April. It happens all year long.

📬 What happens if you ignore a letter from the IRS?

Unfortunately, it usually doesn’t go away.

Depending on the notice, waiting too long could lead to additional penalties and interest, collection activity or fewer options for resolving the issue.

The better move? Open it. Read it. Respond by the deadline.

And if you’re not sure what the IRS is asking — or what you should do next — JRJ is available year-round to help you understand the notice and determine your next steps.
