The tradition of singing carols has roots in pagan celebrations of the Winter Solstice. The Victorian era saw a surge in caroling, and many popular caroling songs that people sing today were written during this era.

Though caroling isn't quite as popular as it once was, it’s still a tradition many families, communities, and churches carry on every year.

Go Caroling Day is an easy celebration that spreads joy and cheer. If you’ve never caroled before, select 3-4 easier songs and friends who are in the holiday spirit. Not everyone can carry a tune, but that won’t matter when you’re surrounded by friends and family who share in the fun. Visit friends and neighbors and nursing homes singing the songs with all the joy in your heart and a smile in your face. Afterward, return home for hot chocolate and cookies. Caroling is a simple way to give back to others. Try it!

Today is NATIONAL VANILLA ICE CREAM DAY!
Vanilla is the second most popular flavor in America. The day is part of National Ice Cream Month! Just what we needed on a hot day in July!

Since Americans love vanilla ice cream so much, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that vanilla is the most common flavoring in North America for ice cream. In fact, many people consider vanilla ice cream to be the default flavor.

Many may be familiar with Thomas Jefferson’s vanilla ice cream recipe. The third president of the United States may have discovered vanilla flavor while visiting France. While he wouldn’t have been the first to savor the delicious taste of vanilla ice cream, Jefferson enjoyed jotting down recipes. The same applied to ice cream. He also produced a handwritten copy of a vanilla ice cream recipe in the 1780s. Only ten copies remain. In fact, the Library of Congress houses one copy that has a cookie recipe on the flip side. Today, the ice cream parlor at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota serves the same recipe so that anyone can have a taste. Pretty cool, huh?

HOW TO OBSERVE
Make your own or maybe, go out for some to your local ice cream parlor or scoop up a bowl or cone full from the ice cream in your freezer. Will you add chocolate syrup or caramel? Oh, and don’t forget the sprinkles!

National Cheese Day!
Cheese is yummy as a snack all on its own, and it's also a perfect ingredient in pasta, soups, souffles and many other recipes. We slap it on a cold cut sandwich cold, or it can be grilled and melted! When company comes to visit, nothing is better than a cheeseball, especially when bacon is added!

Cheese is multinational, too! Every nation in the world has their own variety of cheese. Italy seems to have harnessed the market. They did add it to pizza, of course, and that’s pretty amazing. Savor the opportunity if you ever have the chance to taste cheeses from around the world. For example, hop on over to Greece. They have this dessert called cheesecake. Delicious!
