Looking for practical gift for an 18th birthday or a student heading off to college?

It won't fit in a dorm room, but it could make all the difference if the unexpected happens.

When Claudia's kids turned 18, one of their birthday stops was our office to sign their Health Care Directive and Financial Power of Attorney.

Once a child turns 18, parents no longer automatically have the legal authority to speak with medical providers or help manage financial matters if something unexpected happens. While most young adults will never need these documents, having them in place can save a family from unnecessary stress during an already difficult time.

It's not the most exciting birthday or graduation gift, but it's one we wouldn't skip.

Your will doesn't avoid probate.

Yep...we said it.

It's also probably the biggest estate planning misconception we hear. Of course, a will is a really important legal document, but avoiding probate isn't what it does.

A will tells the probate court:
• Here’s who I want to be in charge of my estate.
• Here’s who I want to receive my probate assets.
• For minor children, here’s who I want to be their guardian.

Whether your estate goes through probate depends on how your assets are owned and whether you've planned for them to transfer outside of probate.

Since August is National Make-A-Will Month, it's a good time to review your estate plan, or create one if you haven't yet.

The best estate plan isn't the one with the most documents. It's the one that's built for your family and actually works the way you intend.

Thank you to the Benedictine Living Community-Mother of Mercy for having Claudia speak yesterday.

Many people are surprised to learn how many options may be available when planning for long-term care. The key is often starting the conversation before a crisis forces decisions.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the conversation. We always appreciate the opportunity to learn from the questions and experiences that people share. for having Claudia speak yesterday.

Estate planning is about so much more than having a will.

That's why Claudia is looking forward to joining two other local professionals for Beyond Your Will, a free community workshop focused on estate planning, health care directives, and funeral planning.

These conversations aren't always easy, but understanding your options today can make things much easier for the people you love tomorrow.

We're grateful for opportunities like this to educate our community and help families plan with confidence.

Cabin season is in full swing, which means a lot of Minnesota families are spending time at places that hold years and generations of memories.

One thing we've learned is that keeping the cabin in the family isn't usually about the legal documents. It's about having good conversations and a plan.

Who pays the expenses? Who gets holiday weekends? What happens if someone wants to sell? What happens when the next generation comes along?

The best time to talk about those questions is when everyone is enjoying the cabin, not when a crisis forces the conversation. A little planning today can help ensure the cabin remains a source of good memories for generations to come.

This year, as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we're reminded that before there was independence, there was a declaration. A vision for what could be. Sometimes the biggest things start with a simple idea and the courage to move it forward.

However you're celebrating: good food, good people, fireworks, a little Minnesota summer magic, we hope it's a great weekend.

Happy Independence Day!

We had a great conversation today about something many of us would rather avoid talking about:

planning for death, dying, and the decisions that come with it.
A big thank you to James Neppl with Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Homes and Lori Braegelmann with CentraCare for sharing their expertise on funeral pre-planning and health care directives.

One simple takeaway: having conversations and making decisions ahead of time can be one of the greatest gifts you leave for your family. It can provide clarity, reduce stress, and help loved ones focus on what matters most when the time comes.
