For Attorney Adriana Perkins, immigration law has never been just a practice area. It has always been personal.

One of the founding principles of US immigration law is family reunification. But as Kent McKeever, our Founder and Executive Director, explains in this week's reel—the laws that govern that process don't always reflect that principle.

Kent spent years practicing immigration law before founding GWLS. What he witnessed then, and what our team sees today, is a system with gaps that separate families in ways that feel anything but just.

Some of those gaps are permanent. People who were brought here as children and later returned unlawfully, teenagers who checked a box on a job application just to support their family, spouses trying to build a life alongside a US citizen; these are real people caught in provisions that leave no room for context, no waiver, and no path forward.

"Although we cannot change these laws by ourselves, what we can do is compassionately walk alongside these immigrants and their families and provide zealous advocacy for them at any level that we can."

Discrimination doesn't always announce itself. Sometimes it's quiet, systemic, and dressed up as policy.

It looks like a rental application denied without clear reason. A job offer that quietly disappeared. A courtroom where one side had legal representation and the other had to figure it out alone. For many families in Central Texas, these aren't hypothetical scenarios, they're lived experiences that shape housing, income, and stability for years.

The justice gap isn't only about who can afford an attorney. It's about who has access to the systems meant to protect them in the first place, and who gets left navigating those systems without any guidance at all.

At Greater Waco Legal Services, we exist for exactly these moments. Whether a family is facing housing discrimination, an employment dispute, or a legal proceeding they don't know how to navigate, we meet people where they are and walk with them toward clarity and stability.

Your doctor can treat what's happening inside your body. But they can't call your landlord about the mold in your apartment.

That's exactly why Greater Waco Legal Services and Waco Family Medicine created their Medical-Legal Partnership: embedding an attorney directly inside a healthcare setting to address the legal issues that quietly drive health outcomes.

Attorney Jessica Treviño has seen it firsthand.

"It's not just what's going on in your body. It's really affected by where you work, where you live, what you eat and what your resources are."

From unsafe housing and immigration concerns to custody disputes and access to public benefits, Jessica works alongside medical providers to make sure patients get the full picture of support they need, not just a prescription.

Thanks to a $9,200 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation, this work is growing. The partnership currently serves around 80 patients each year on a sliding scale payment model, regardless of ability to pay.
