What is estate planning?
In legalese (please don’t fall asleep): estate planning is the preparation of documents that serve to manage an individual's asset base in the event of their incapacitation or death. The planning includes the bequest of assets to heirs and the settlement of estate taxes. 😴😴
In real people words: estate planning is making sure your stuff and minor children go to the people you want.
For some, estate planning conjures up the thought of large country estates, private jets, old men with monocles, and vacation homes in the Hamptons. That is not necessarily the case. Estate planning in its most basic form is making sure that if you are ever incapacitated (i.e. coma, Alzheimer’s, etc…) or when you die, that there are proper documents to make sure that your minor children are taken care of and your stuff (i.e. your money, 401ks, life insurance, businesses, bank accounts, house, baseball card collection, your favorite spork, etc…) goes where you want it to as opposed to having the courts help decide.
This normally includes documents like: wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advanced health care directives. (FYI: I will be writing more on what those things are in later posts)
