As we enjoy the warmth of early summer, it's important to remember why Memorial Day truly matters. Originally known as Decoration Day, this solemn holiday was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to honor those who died in the Civil War. Citizens decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, a poignant symbol of remembrance.

Over the years, Memorial in May, with Congress passing the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968 to ensure a three-day weekend for federal employees. This act also declared Memorial Day as a federal holiday, ensuring its observance across the United States.

Memorial Day is not just about barbecues and the unofficial start of summer; it's a day for reflection, gratitude, and remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Today, we honor over one million men and women who have died in military service since the Civil War.

As you spend time with loved ones, take a moment to remember the courageous souls who have given their lives in defense of our country. Let's cherish our freedom that they fought so hard for and keep their memories alive. 🇺🤍💙❤️

Congratulations to Mr. Derek Smith for his selection as a Top 40 Under 40!

Mr. Derek Smith is a seasoned trial attorney who loves jury trials and crafting legal arguments. His most recent experience has come from working as a public defender with the City of Norfolk where he handled approximately 1,000 cases in Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

He handles felony and misdemeanor matters, as well as matters involving juvenile defendants, including, but not limited to, felony drug offenses, felony probation violations, property crimes, violent crimes, weapons offenses, and traffic offenses, among others. Derek was recognized as the Public Practitioner of the Year by the South Hampton Roads Bar Association in 2020.
