Here is an update to the "Orange is the New Shore" Shore Drive Construction projects. The eastbound lanes will see the most activity for the next 13 months. The sidewalk on that side will be closed, so use the crosswalks and stay safe. The contractor has promised new equipment is on the way that will improve the pothole patches that we have endured. I don't know about you, but I'm down two tires and just had to replace my shocks AND my dentures! On the good news, people do make a difference when they speak up, and thanks to residents who pushed for it, a chain link fence was setup around the live oaks in front of Cape Henry Towers to protect them from the staging area, and also in front of Westminster Canterbury. The timelines for each project are shown in yellow and more details are on my webpage.

This month's coloring page of historic homes includes one that is near and dear to many longtime residents of Virginia Beach that remember when it stood proud in our community. The original home was built in 1826 by John Singleton, who lost the home just two years later due to gambling debt. The next owner James Garrison was responsible for the expansion and later for subdividing the property. He sold a portion to Judge Lansing D. Wetmore, a law and timberman from Pennsylvania, who sold portions off for recently freed slaves in 1888. That community was named Beechwood by the seven families of sharecroppers who made it their first home as free Americans. In 2025, the property, part of the original Bayville Farm Plantation, received a historic marker at the corner of First Court and Pleasure House Roads.

I was delighted to pass the keys of this bayfront condo over to a new family who will undoubtably find a lot of joy living here. It was a challenging experience getting to the closing table but seeing their son's eye's light up when he walked in for the first time restored the wind in my sails!
