A difficult divorce conversation can move from school schedules to money to something that happened ten years ago in a matter of minutes.

I encourage people to decide what the meeting is for before it begins.

A focused agenda gives one issue room to be discussed. Agree on the topic, allow time to listen, and write down the questions that still need professional guidance.

If direct conversations involve pressure, intimidation, or safety concerns, talk with your attorney about an appropriate process and support before arranging a meeting.

You do not have to resolve everything at once to make a conversation useful.

Bring one clearly defined issue to your next meeting with your attorney or mediator.

I often ask families to think about the ordinary work that keeps a household running.

The mortgage. The utilities. The insurance payment. The subscriptions that renew without anyone noticing.

If one person handles all of it, the other may be left learning the system while managing an illness or a loss.

Make a simple household guide showing what gets paid, when it is due, and where the account information is securely kept. Keep passwords out of an openly shared document. Then discuss with your attorney how the right person would have legal authority to help when needed.

Knowing the routine and having authority to act are both part of the conversation.

When I discuss a health care power of attorney, I want the conversation to go beyond a name on a form.

The person you choose needs to understand what matters to you. What makes life meaningful? Which beliefs should guide difficult choices? What would you want your doctors to know?

You do not have to predict every medical situation. You can give your agent a better understanding of the person behind the paperwork.

Discuss your wishes with your chosen agent and your health care providers, and work with your attorney to document them appropriately.

Share this with the person you would want beside you in that conversation.

On Columbus Day, I’m thinking about the difference between having a destination and having a direction.

For a family, that direction starts with a conversation: What do we want our life together to look like?

More time with the people we love. Opportunities for our children. Support for an aging parent. A home where everyone feels secure.

Those answers give a legal plan its purpose. When I think about estate planning, I start with the people and the life the plan is meant to support.

You cannot predict every turn ahead. But you can decide what matters and let those priorities guide your choices.

At dinner tonight, ask each person to name one hope for your family’s next chapter. Listen before you start solving. Your answers can help shape the questions you bring to your next planning meeting.
