If you’ve gotten a text about an “unpaid toll” or a “BMV problem” asking you to click a link, delete it. The Indiana BMV and Attorney General have warned about fake toll-violation and license-suspension messages. The BMV and State do not demand payment through unsolicited texts. 📱🚫

Don’t click links or scan QR codes in unexpected messages. Verify any real toll or violation through official channels you access yourself. If you shared information or paid, report it to the Indiana Attorney General’s office.

These scams can put older residents at risk. Take a moment to check in with a parent or grandparent and make sure they know how to verify a message and who they trust to help with their accounts.

A power of attorney can name someone to help manage affairs if the document grants that authority and the person can no longer manage things on their own. It’s worth discussing before it’s needed.

Asking a chatbot for legal advice feels private, but it may not be.

A federal court in New York ruled this year that a person's conversations with a consumer AI tool were not protected by attorney-client privilege. The reasons matter:

• The AI is not an attorney.
• Consumer tools may store your information, and their privacy terms can allow it to be used or shared.
• Privilege protects your conversations with your own lawyer. It does not extend to a search bar.

Why that matters in a divorce or an estate dispute:

• Messages and records can become evidence.
• A detailed prompt can read like a statement of facts about your case.
• The other side may not have to treat it as confidential.

If it's sensitive, it's worth a real conversation instead of a search bar.

I'm in Indianapolis today for "Inhalants 101," an in-person session hosted by the Indiana State Department of Toxicology.

The presentation covers inhalants, including DFE and nitrous oxide, and how they affect the body and driving behavior. Melissa Galey, ISDT's forensic toxicologist, is leading it, with a Q&A afterward.

Why does that matter to a small-town practice in Jennings County? Because impaired driving cases increasingly involve substances that will not show up on a standard breath test. Understanding how these substances affect the body, and how the science gets tested, matters when the facts of a case are in dispute.

Did you know Indiana changed how “change of judge” requests work in family-law cases? Effective February 2, 2026, Indiana Trial Rule 76 generally limits a party to one change-of-judge request for the entire civil case: including later petitions involving custody or support. A second request may not be available when circumstances change.

Timing matters. Specific exceptions, deadlines, and procedural requirements may apply, so review the current rule and your case with counsel before making decisions.
