🚗 Do You Have the Right Auto Insurance? Every Florida Driver Should Know This!

Many Floridians assume they have "full coverage," only to discover after a crash that they don't have the protection they thought they did. Here are the coverages every Florida driver should understand:

✅ Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – Required in Florida. PIP generally pays a portion of your medical expenses and lost wages after a crash, regardless of who caused the accident. However, it often isn't enough to cover serious injuries. You may have a deductible on your PIP which you should consider removing to ensure you get the full PIP amount.

✅ Bodily Injury Liability (BI) – While not required for most Florida drivers, BI is one of the most important coverages you can carry. If you cause an accident that injures someone else, BI helps pay for their damages and can protect your savings, income, and other assets from a lawsuit.

✅ Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) Coverage – This may be the most valuable coverage you can purchase. If you're injured by a driver who has no insurance or insufficient insurance, UM/UIM can help compensate you for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. UM is not expensive but it cannot exceed the BI coverage you elect to carry. However, you may be surprised how affordable BI and UM are once you have secured auto insurance. We at Ge**er Law give sad news to potential clients every week who are seriously injured and have no opportunity for recovery because the at fault driver has no BI and they have no UM. No one wants to be put in that situation, but it’s very common.

✅ Property Damage Liability (PDL) – Required in Florida. This coverage pays for damage you cause to someone else's vehicle or other property. Although only $10,000.00 is required, consider increasing the coverage in the event you damage a high-end or luxury vehicle.

✅ Collision Coverage – Pays to repair or replace your own vehicle after a crash, regardless of who was at fault (subject to your deductible).

✅ Comprehensive Coverage – Protects your vehicle from non-collision losses such as theft, vandalism, fire, flooding, falling objects, or animal strikes.

💡 Take 10 minutes today to review your policy. A serious accident can happen in seconds, and the right coverage can make a tremendous difference for you and your family.

If you aren't sure what coverages you have, ask your insurance agent to explain your policy and whether your limits adequately protect you.

💰 What's the Difference Between Economic and Non-Economic Damages in a Personal Injury Case?

After an accident, you may hear the terms economic damages and non-economic damages. Here's what they mean:

💵 Economic Damages are the financial losses you can calculate. These may include:
✔️ Medical bills (past and future)
✔️ Lost wages
✔️ Loss of future earning capacity
✔️ Rehabilitation expenses
✔️ Prescription costs
✔️ Property damage
✔️ Other out-of-pocket expenses related to the injury

These damages are supported by bills, receipts, pay records, and expert opinions.

❤️ Non-Economic Damages compensate you for the personal, human impact of an injury—losses that don't come with a receipt. These may include:
✔️ Physical pain and suffering
✔️ Mental anguish and emotional distress
✔️ Loss of enjoyment of life
✔️ Physical impairment or disability
✔️ Scarring or disfigurement
✔️ Inconvenience
✔️ Loss of the ability to participate in hobbies, family activities, and other parts of everyday life

A serious injury affects much more than your finances. It can change how you work, care for your family, enjoy your favorite activities, and experience everyday life. That's why the law recognizes both economic and non-economic damages when someone else's negligence causes harm.

If you've been injured in an accident, it's important to understand that your claim may involve much more than just reimbursement for your medical bills.

"A republic, if you can keep it." — Benjamin Franklin

Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of visionary leaders gathered to forge a nation built not on the divine right of kings, but on the rule of law and the immutable rights of humankind. 🏛️

As legal professionals, we stand in profound awe of the enduring framework created by the Founding Fathers. Their courage in 1776 laid the cornerstone for the very liberties we advocate for and defend today. This July 4th, we express our deepest gratitude for their sacrifice, their intellect, and their revolutionary belief in a nation governed by "The People."

We are honored to uphold their legacy in and out of the courtroom every day. Wishing everyone a safe, reflective, and happy America 250. 🔴⚪🔵

Feel fine after an accident? You may still need to see a doctor.

Many injuries don't appear immediately after a crash. Symptoms such as whiplash, concussions, back and neck pain, and soft tissue injuries can take hours or even days to develop.

Seeking prompt medical attention can help identify injuries early and create medical records that document your condition and treatment.

An injury can affect more than your health. It may impact your ability to work, participate in daily activities, care for your family, and enjoy the things you love.

Florida summers mean more kids outside, more cars on the road, and more opportunities for preventable injuries.

School may be out, but the risks are very real. Busy pools, crowded neighborhoods, distracted drivers, bicycle accidents, playground injuries, and unsafe summer activities can all lead to serious harm.

As a personal injury firm, we want families to enjoy the summer while staying alert and informed.

A few important reminders:

Watch carefully for children crossing streets unexpectedly.

Slow down in residential neighborhoods, parking lots, and near parks, pools, and recreation areas.

Never leave young children unattended around water, even for a moment.

Make sure pool areas are properly supervised, secured, and equipped with working barriers, gates, or alarms when appropriate.

Stay extra aware in parking lots, where children can be difficult to see.

Check that bikes, helmets, and other safety gear are in good condition before children ride.

For young children, pool hazards are especially dangerous because drowning can happen quickly and quietly. A single moment of inattention can change a family’s summer forever.

If your child is hurt because someone else failed to take reasonable care, your family may have legal options.

Stay safe. Stay alert. Protect the moments that matter most.

As spring turns into summer, Sarasota roads, beaches, crosswalks, and bike lanes remain busy with visitors, local traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians enjoying the beautiful weather.

Areas near Siesta Key, downtown Sarasota, and other busy coastal corridors can become especially congested, making it important for everyone to stay alert.

Drivers should use extra caution near crosswalks, watch carefully for cyclists and pedestrians, slow down in crowded areas, and be especially mindful near beach access points and at dusk.

Pedestrians and cyclists should use marked crossings, stay visible, avoid distractions, and never assume a driver sees them.

Safety is a shared responsibility. But when someone is injured because another person was careless, they have rights.

If you or someone you love has been hurt in a pedestrian or bicycle accident, we’re here to help you understand your options.

Accident in Florida, but the other driver is from out of state?

This happens more often than many people realize, especially here in Florida.

If the other driver is from another state, you may be wondering:

• Does Florida law still apply?
• Which insurance company pays first?
• Does my PIP coverage still apply?
• Can multiple insurance companies become involved?

In many cases, Florida law still governs the accident because the crash happened here. Florida drivers may also need to use their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage first for certain medical expenses, regardless of who caused the crash.

However, when an out-of-state driver is involved, things can become more complicated. Different insurance policies, multiple adjusters, and coverage questions can sometimes create delays or confusion.

One important reminder: what you say to insurance companies early in the process can affect your claim.

If you have questions after a Florida accident involving an out-of-state driver, Ge**er Law is happy to help.
