🚗 Do You Have the Right Auto Insurance? Every Florida Driver Should Know This!
Many Floridians assume they have "full coverage," only to discover after a crash that they don't have the protection they thought they did. Here are the coverages every Florida driver should understand:
✅ Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – Required in Florida. PIP generally pays a portion of your medical expenses and lost wages after a crash, regardless of who caused the accident. However, it often isn't enough to cover serious injuries. You may have a deductible on your PIP which you should consider removing to ensure you get the full PIP amount.
✅ Bodily Injury Liability (BI) – While not required for most Florida drivers, BI is one of the most important coverages you can carry. If you cause an accident that injures someone else, BI helps pay for their damages and can protect your savings, income, and other assets from a lawsuit.
✅ Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) Coverage – This may be the most valuable coverage you can purchase. If you're injured by a driver who has no insurance or insufficient insurance, UM/UIM can help compensate you for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. UM is not expensive but it cannot exceed the BI coverage you elect to carry. However, you may be surprised how affordable BI and UM are once you have secured auto insurance. We at Ge**er Law give sad news to potential clients every week who are seriously injured and have no opportunity for recovery because the at fault driver has no BI and they have no UM. No one wants to be put in that situation, but it’s very common.
✅ Property Damage Liability (PDL) – Required in Florida. This coverage pays for damage you cause to someone else's vehicle or other property. Although only $10,000.00 is required, consider increasing the coverage in the event you damage a high-end or luxury vehicle.
✅ Collision Coverage – Pays to repair or replace your own vehicle after a crash, regardless of who was at fault (subject to your deductible).
✅ Comprehensive Coverage – Protects your vehicle from non-collision losses such as theft, vandalism, fire, flooding, falling objects, or animal strikes.
💡 Take 10 minutes today to review your policy. A serious accident can happen in seconds, and the right coverage can make a tremendous difference for you and your family.
If you aren't sure what coverages you have, ask your insurance agent to explain your policy and whether your limits adequately protect you.
