Did you know it’s national estate planning week? Neither did I. Here’s your reminder to get your estate planning done. If you’ve already done it, a quick review to make sure things are up to date is always a good idea.

Did you know I am now taking adoption cases? A colleague recently retired but prior to her retirement, she shared her adoption wisdom with me. I am enjoying this area of law immensely. And adoption work ties nicely with estate planning — I haven’t given that up! If you know someone that is going through an adoption or someone that needs to update their estate plan because of a new addition to their family, send them my way. I appreciate referrals!

An estate plan is important especially if you have children. Who will be your children’s guardian? How will your estate be distributed? Regardless of age, assets or marital status, an estate plan is important to make sure your wishes are carried out. I am doing free consults over the phone, zoom and in person (socially distanced with masks).

Was your New Years resolution to get your estate plan in order? Perhaps the craziness of 2020 derailed those plans, but it isn’t too late. There is still time to get this done before the end of the year. Many of my clients tell me that it’s surprisingly easy and quick, and a big relief once it’s done. Let me help you meet your resolution.

Relief. That is the word I most often hear client’s use after getting their estate planning documents done. They’ve put off doing it for years, it’s been hanging over their head, and now it’s done and they are relieved. If you need relief from what’s been on your “to do” list for far too long, give me a call.

Worried that you don’t have a Will? Give me a call. We can schedule meetings over the phone or through Zoom. Don’t try to do it yourself over the Internet.

Do you know the importance of a Power of Attorney? Do you know what a Will does? Do you know what a Community Property Agreement does? If you don’t know, chances are you haven’t been in to see me. We cover this and more during your first no cost consultation.

Several years ago my news resolution was to get a Will prepared. I felt like a hypocrite telling my clients about the importance of creating an estate plan but having nothing in place myself. The truth of it was I was overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start. I finally started drafting my Will and it became less overwhelming — because I actually started working on it. When people put off coming in to talk to me about creating an estate plan, I get it. It can be overwhelming but I am here to help you break it down, brainstorm and ultimately get something in place that offers you peace of mind.

Estate planning can be uncomfortable. It forces us to think about death and dying. Clients have told me they put it off because if they didn’t do anything then nothing would happen to them. We all know that isn’t how it works. So instead of waiting until it’s too late, get ahead of it now. Plan for your children’s future in the event you aren’t around. Make that specific bequest to a charity near and dear to your heart because without a Will, it isn’t going to happen. I think you’ll find relief in doing something you’ve put off because of fear.

Estate planning is often something that is put off because people don’t want to think about the possibility of death and dying. Others put it off because they fear the cost. I understand both concerns. After an initial meeting, my clients typically overcome those concerns and feel a tremendous amount of relief when their estate is in order. Being prepared now brings peace of mind later.

Many people come in focused on preparing a Will in the event of their death. What most people don’t realize is that a Power of Attorney is equally important in the event they are unable to make decisions for themselves. Decisions relating to property, health care, accounts, etc. can be memorialized in a Power of Attorney. The alternative to a Power of Attorney is a guardianship proceeding which can take time and money at an already difficult time. Whether it’s a Will or Power of Attorney or both, I can help you get a plan together.
