Bike-related injuries peak during the warmer months and remain high through October. Here are some safety tips to help ensure everyone’s well-being on the road:
For cyclists: Always wear a properly fitted helmet certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, utilize lights and reflectors, wear bright retroreflective clothing, ride in the same direction as traffic, obey all traffic laws, yield to pedestrians, be cautious at intersections, and inspect your bike before every ride to make sure brakes, tires, and gears are working properly.
For drivers: Slow down and follow speed limits near cyclists, give at least three feet of space when passing individuals biking or change lanes when possible, be alert at intersections and when opening car doors near bike lanes, and avoid distractions or impaired driving to prevent collisions.
