● Drivers traveling in Michigan should instead use hands-free options if needed, such as making voice commands through a vehicle’s hands-free technology or a mounted cellphone.●

*** Under the law, holding or using a cellphone while driving becomes a primary offense -- meaning that law enforcement can pull someone over and ticket them for this offense. However police are not allowed to search a driver solely because of this violation.***

● The Michigan Department of Transportation on Thursday said it will begin erecting road signs that read: “Michigan Law Hands-Free Device Use Only.”

● .The signs, which will be present at state line and border crossings, are meant to remind drivers of Michigan’s new hands-free driving law.

NEW LAW GOES INTO EFFECT JUNE 30, 2023:

There is a new law concerning cell phone use while driving going into effect in Michigan.
The bill amends Michigan law to make it illegal to “use a mobile electronic device to do any task, including, but not limited to” the following:

● Send or receive a telephone call.
● Send, receive, or read a text message;
● View, record, or transmit a video;
● Access, read, or post to a social networking site.

The law makes holding or using a cell phone while driving a primary offense -- meaning an Officer could pull someone over and ticket them for this offense.

UPDATE ON FACIAL MASKS
Governor's Executive Order 147

Macomb County Sheriff's Office will NOT be issuing citations to those not wearing a mask. Those who wish to make a complaint will be referred to the Attorney General’s Office.

If a business wishes to enforce the Governor's order, they may require patrons to wear a mask. If the patron refuses, the business may ask them to leave their establishment. If the patron refuses, the business may contact Law Enforcement & they will treat it as a trespassing complaint.

If a citizen would like to file a compliant against a person not wearing a face mask when required OR a business failing to enforce this order, please contact: (888)535-6136 OR [email protected]. The Sheriff's Office will respond to an establishment that contacts them regarding a person(s) being non-compliant with wearing a face mask or who does not leave a business. Law Enforcement will take direction from the business owner or establishment representative on course of action.
