The Juneteenth holiday marks the end of slavery in the United States by commemorating the date in 1865 when Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced to the 250,000 African Americans still in bo***ge there that they were legally free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
