Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala is calling for every member of the county retirement board to resign as the pension system faces a $1.4 billion unfunded liability and is projected to become insolvent by 2043 without changes.

A working group found the county could need to contribute up to an additional $100 million annually for decades to meet obligations to thousands of retirees, while Zappala accused elected officials on the board of failing to seek necessary funding because they were “too politically conflicted to ask.”

Zappala also criticized what he described as “months of closed-door meetings with high-priced experts” and called for the state to take control of the pension system, alleging local mismanagement.
