**WE ARE 1 MONTH AWAY FROM THE STAR ID ENFORCEMENT DATE – May 7, 2025**
What you need to know:
- On May 7, 2025, Alabamians planning to fly domestic in the United States (U.S.) or enter certain federal facilities will need a REAL ID-compliant driver license (known as STAR ID in Alabama) or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport.
- If you don’t plan to fly or plan on visiting certain federal facilities, including some military installations, then a STAR ID is not necessary. Your regular Alabama driver license will continue to be valid for driving, voting, and other everyday activities. It is completely up to you to get a STAR ID or not. However, a regular Alabama Driver License will not be accepted for federal identification and will display “Not for Federal Identification” at the top of the card.
- Appointments are filling up fast! If individuals do not have an appointment for STAR ID, prolonged wait times are to be expected at this point, especially in the larger areas such as Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile. If appointments are booked in your area, we are encouraging citizens to check other nearby examining offices.
- In 2012, Alabama began offering STAR IDs statewide to ensure those who wished to obtain a STAR ID were able, well before the federal deadline.
- Don’t panic if you do not have your STAR ID and cannot get an immediate appointment in your area. If your trip is still several months out, you can still obtain a STAR ID after May 7, from one of ALEA’s Examining Offices. May 7, is the federal enforcement date and not the last day Alabama will be offering STAR ID services.
- The fee for a STAR ID is $36.25, the same as for a regular Alabama driver's license or non-driver ID card. If citizens choose to wait and obtain their STAR ID at the same time they are renewing their regular license, there is no additional fee from the standard $36.25 renewal fee.
