The IRS is warning taxpayers against a scam that is making the rounds, recently. The scam communication purports to be NOTICE OF AN UNCLAIMED TAX RETURN, which may come via email, text message, or by regular USPS mail in a cardboard envelope.
Be on the lookout for communications with fake or fake-looking IRS logos, fake IRS contact information, or a link to a non-IRS website. These communications will typically ask for sensitive information such as a photo of your driver's license, your mobile phone number, your banking information (such as account and routing numbers), and/or your social security number.
The IRS will never initiate contact with a taxpayer regarding a bill or tax refund by email, text, or social media. So, all those communications are easy to spot and dismiss. Be especially careful responding to regular mail concerning an unclaimed tax return!
