WE ARE HIRING!!
New Position - Criminal Defense Legal Assistant – This May Not Be What You Think
Downtown Tulsa Criminal Defense attorney is looking for a Legal Assistant with Oklahoma state court legal knowledge and experience. The firm currently consists of 1 attorney, a legal assistant/executive assistant (vacant) and a marketing director. This is a job where you can learn, grow, and have real influence on important issues and on the business.
But it is not for everyone…
My practice is 100% devoted to defending individuals charged with s*x crimes and high-end domestic violence cases (with a s*x component). This is a job that you can thrive and believe in if you know that justice requires the presumption of innocence and a strong legal defense. Is that you? Are you a future Joan Holloway (from Mad Men), or a Lloyd Lee (from Entourage), or even a Pepper Potts (Iron Man)? A strong willed, organized person who wants to be part of a team working to make a difference and to see that justice is done?
But, if you are such an extraordinary person, perhaps you never thought there would be a position out there that would be right for you. Want to know more about whether or not it’s a good match? Well, are you are the kind of person who would thrive in a job with a demanding boss who is out slaying dragons and where you are treated as a valued professional who manages their calendar, anticipates and solves their problems, makes them happy, and is the super-hero that saves the day for them-often. If this is you, then you might love this position (and might not think of it as a job but more of a calling). That’s this position but…
This is not a job for someone new to the law or without any experience as an assistant to a busy professional or executive. You must have worked for a type A and busy professional before and actually liked the adrenalin, taming the chaos, and being part of the solution. I am not the professional you want to start with if you have never done this kind of work before. Be honest with yourself.
What else would make you great at this? You must be amazing on the phone, able to convert the “new client” caller to a scheduled appointment, and be a nice person with a pleasant demeanor. To thrive and to love it, you’d need to think of yourself as a very patient person, have thick skin, be detail oriented, organized, flexible and open minded to the way we do business. Phone sales or retention experience in your past is valuable (but not essential). If you have any, list it in your cover letter.
The preferred applicant will have experience meeting and interviewing clients and customers and some experience preparing basic motions and correspondence. A perfect candidate (who’d expect the higher level of compensation) would have all of those qualities and be familiar with Oklahoma State Court procedures, practice management software (CLIO), summarizing interviews/police reports, reviewing discovery, basic legal research and writing, controlling and managing the firm's calendar, and communicating with the courts.
