Whether your kids are toddlers, teenagers, or twenty-somethings, informing them of your impending divorce is not an easy task. Divorce is a challenging life event for any family, and it is important to handle the situation in the right way at the right time. Breaking the news is only half the battle. The rest lies in navigating the separation process with grace. Check out our tips to help your kids through the divorce process.

Tip #4: Support the relationship between your kids and your ex-spouse.

Although your marital relationship is over, you remain connected through your children’s relationships with both parents. Encouraging the relationship between your kids and your ex-spouse will support ongoing communication between all parties and remove any guilt associated with the appearance of choosing sides. Support the visitation schedule, make recommendations for activities, and let your ex-spouse know how your kids are doing and how they can help. Keeping the lines of communication open between you and your ex-spouse will foster healthy relationships in your family overall.

Managing your divorce is hard and often unpredictable, but if parents keep the mental and emotional health of their children at the center of the process, kids will be better equipped to handle the separation and continue to have a positive relationship with both parents. Q: Can a custodial parent move out of state with children?

A: Yes, but not without communication with both the court and the other parent. It is advised for the moving parent to obtain permission from the court before making official arrangements. Most custodial agreements specify how far one parent may move away from the other, but courts can rework agreements to allow the custodial parent to move to a different state if it is agreed upon by both parties.

The attorneys at Henry + Dow + Masters + Aycock are skilled at fighting for custody rights in court. Get in touch today at www.henrydowlaw.com.

When it comes to custody, if a couple cannot come to an agreement on visitation or custody, a family law judge will make the decision for them. The judge will not be aware of the facts, history, or family dynamic outside of what they hear from you and your attorney. Check out tips from Henry + Dow + Masters + Aycock to help you during your custody battle.

Tip #5: Be reasonable and open to communicate.
Communicate freely with your ex-spouse, their attorney, and the judge. Answer text messages, phone calls, and emails in a timely manner and use respectful and appropriate language. Emotions may be high, but you can’t let your feelings speak for you. Willingness to co-parent sensibly will drastically increase your chance at a favorable outcome. Keep your venting to a trusted outside party.

By the end of your custody battle, you want to prove yourself open to co-parenting responsibly and reasonably. Our nationally recognized family law attorneys at Henry + Dow + Masters + Aycock can help you in your fight. Contact us today to get started: www.henrydowlaw.com.

Whether or not you wanted the divorce, the process is challenging and emotional for all parties. It’s important to do certain things and avoid others during and after the process to maintain your sanity and help you move forward.

DON’T: Stay in the past.
Even though it’s easy to dwell in stressful or painful situations, make an effort to look toward the future. Use this time to think about what you really want and take small steps every day toward that purpose. Setting small goals and celebrating small victories will give you a much more positive outlook on the opportunities that await you.

The word “family” refers to people who share a meaningful bond. Sometimes it’s a blood relative and other times it means a blended group brought about by marriage or friends you choose to call family.

No matter how they’re made, all families share love and support for one another, and today reminds us to be thankful for those in our lives we call family. Happy National Family Day from Henry + Dow + Masters + Aycock!
