On Thursday, April 21, motorists will notice a highly visible police presence along the north and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 61, between Interstate 70 and the Village of Eolia, Mo. This multi-agency safety initiative is presented by the St. Charles County Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol in observance of National Distracted Driver Awareness Month.

U.S. Highway 61 is a noncontrolled-access roadway that is not intended for high-speed vehicular traffic. Still, many motorists frequently drive distracted at increased speeds causing collisions with vehicles exiting and entering from the byroads.

β€œDistracted driving is a leading and preventable cause of traffic-related accidents,” says St. Charles County Police Chief Kurt Frisz. β€œWe believe the increased visibility of marked police vehicles will create a deterrence for distracted and aggressive drivers on the heavily traveled roadway, which has had some significant safety concerns.”

Driving recklessly is a costly choice. Motorists are offered the following safety tips to reduce the risk of motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities:

1. Stay focused.
2. Abide by posted speed limits.
3. Observe seat belt laws.
4. Decrease distracted driving – no texting and driving.
5. Increase use of age- and size-appropriate child safety and booster seats.
6. Be aware of areas around exits and crossovers.

β€œRoad safety is everyone’s responsibility, so be attentive,” Chief Frisz says. β€œTraffic law violators will be issued citations and referred to the municipal courts.”

On March 13, 2020, national and state emergencies were declared following the classification of COVID-19 as a pandemic. In response to that, the Missouri Supreme Court issued an order on March 16, 2020, as a precautionary measure to combat the spread of the disease to the public and the employees of the Missouri judiciary.

The courts of the State of Missouri are remaining open at this time; however, the Missouri Supreme Court has suspended all in-person proceedings in all appellate and circuit courts, including all associate, family, juvenile, municipal and probate divisions. The suspension will last from Tuesday, March 17, 2020, through Friday, April 3, 2020, and may be extended by order of the Missouri Supreme Court as circumstances warrant.

What does this mean for your current case? Butler & Tomko, LLC, is remaining open at this time and will continue to work on your case and make sure all emergencies are dealt with and all deadlines are met. However, if there is a current court appearance scheduled, it will likely be continued until a later date. Notices to all clients who have court appearances have been mailed out notifying you of your new court date. We intend to keep all of our clients updated on the developments regarding the judiciary system as we are made aware of them.

Our office will remain open and at this time all of our attorneys and staff will be present in the office to handle your cases. Because the situation with COVID-19 is changing quickly, our priorities are to keep our employees as well as our clients safe. As a result we have implemented the following precautionary measures at the office, effective March 17, 2020.

We are asking that where possible, all appointments be rescheduled to a later date or changed to a phone appointment. If you feel an in person appointment is necessary, please contact us and we will make the appropriate arrangements. We would like to limit the number of people in our office as much as possible to limit any chance of infection and/or spread of the virus. As always, any client is welcome to contact us via phone or email. We are happy to help any way we can.

We will continue to update our clients as things progress with your case as well as the judiciary. We hope and pray that all of our clients remain healthy and safe and that this pandemic ends swiftly.

New tax laws for 2019 will make calculating alimony completely different. If you were divorced before Jan.1, 2019, you will be grandfathered in and not have any changes. However, if your agreements are modified, you will be under the new tax laws. Forbes breaks down the changes:

The big 2017 tax law made dramatic changes affecting divorce, alimony and taxes starting in 2019. Here's how and how to plan for them.
