If you are a foreign national and need a driver's license, please make sure that you file as early as possible. The longer that the federal government is shutdown, the longer it could take for verification requests from the Michigan Secretary of State to get resolved/receive a response in order to issue a driver’s license to a foreign national.

USCIS updated policy guidance to instruct its officers to apply the same level of scrutiny to both initial petitions and extension requests for nearly all nonimmigrant classifications filed using Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker. The new policy guidance supersedes and rescinds prior guidance regarding officers providing deference to prior determinations of eligibility in the adjudication of petitions for extension of nonimmigrant status, including rescinding guidance from 2004 and 2015. The new guidance is effective immediately.

On July 13, 2017, the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii, modified the preliminary injunction that had previously been narrowed by the Supreme Court to prevent
the government from enforcing the travel ban against individuals from the six affected countries who have a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States. The District Court overturned the DOS and DHS FAQs noted below and concluded that the travel ban cannot be enforced against:

• Grandparents, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins of persons in the United States; and

• Refugees who have a formal assurance from a resettlement agency in the United States or
who are part of the Lautenberg Program.

Update regarding "Travel Ban": The Supreme Court granted certiorari, consolidated the 4th and 9th Circuit cases, and ruled that the travel and refugee bans "may not be enforced against foreign nationals who have a credible claim of a bona fide relationship" with a U.S. person or entity.
