Red Friday is here, and if you have been looking for a way to show up for our deployed service members, here is one of the easiest and most meaningful things you can do. Build a care package and send it their way.

You do not need anything fancy. A medium flat rate USPS box, some thoughtful items, and a handwritten note go a long way. Non-perishable snacks, beef jerky, protein bars, and trail mix are always welcome, along with hygiene items like wet wipes, lip balm, and sunscreen. Books, playing cards, and puzzle books help fill the downtime, and socks are one of those simple things that never go unappreciated.

A few things to leave out. Skip alcohol, weapons, aerosol cans, anything perishable, and glass containers that can break in transit. If your service member is deployed to a region with religious dietary restrictions, it is best to leave out pork products too.

Pack it tight so nothing shifts, double bag anything liquid, and use a USPS flat rate military box since it ships at the same rate no matter the weight. Ship early. Mail to APO and FPO addresses can take one to two weeks, so give it time to arrive.

And do not skip the note. Out of everything you could put in that box, a handwritten letter is consistently what means the most. Just a few lines telling them someone back home is thinking of them can carry a service member through a hard day.

Let's bust a myth I hear constantly. "It's a bad time to sell because rates are high."
