Summer comes faster than you think, and for co-parents, a little planning now can prevent a lot of conflict later. Custody schedules, travel notice, camp coordination: these are details worth sorting out before the season gets busy.

In my recent blog, I cover what to review now and how to get ahead of the most common sources of summer disputes.

One of the most important things I talk through with clients when a case is taking longer than expected: how you show up throughout the process matters just as much as the outcome you are working toward.

The way you communicate, the decisions you make, the tone you take: all of it can find its way into the record.

That means taking the high road, even when it is hard. Especially when it is hard.

It also means being honest, fully and consistently. Courts pay attention to credibility, and a client who is straightforward, even about the uncomfortable details, builds trust with the court in ways that serve them well over time.

Cases that drag on are exhausting, and that exhaustion is real and valid. But how you carry yourself through the process is something both you and the court will look back on.

After multiple days in court, I have a happy client and a lot to reflect on.

One thing I relearned this trial: the way counsel conducts themselves matters. When both sides show up prepared, professional, and respectful, the process works better for everyone, especially the clients. Sometimes experiencing lack of professionalism and respect are a good reminder of why civility is worth protecting.

Good results and good conduct are not mutually exclusive, and at the end of the day, my client and I walked away proud of how we handled ourselves.

Attorneys and clients: have you experienced a case where counsel's conduct affected the process? I would love to hear your thoughts.

After a separation, coordinating schedules, expenses, and decisions with your co-parent can feel overwhelming, especially when communication has become difficult.

Co-parenting apps can help. The right tool keeps communication organized and creates a clear, time-stamped record that can matter more than you expect in court.

In my latest blog, I break down how these tools work, what to look for, and which ones I have seen work well for clients in real situations.

I had a wonderful time at the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association Women's Committee 19th Annual Scholarship Tea, catching up with colleagues and hearing from keynote speaker Senator Angela D. Alsobrooks.

Supporting women in law and funding scholarships for aspiring lawyers are causes close to my heart, and being there was a privilege!

Summer has a way of sneaking up, especially when it comes to custody schedules.

I’ve found that many co-parenting conflicts start when plans are made too late. A trip gets booked. A camp gets scheduled. And suddenly, you’re trying to sort out schedules after the fact.

Planning ahead makes a real difference.

Now’s a good time to revisit your custody agreement and think through what summer might look like. Travel, camps, and any changes to your usual routine all matter. A quick check-in now can help avoid a lot of confusion later on.

I shared some helpful tips about this in my latest blog post:

If you’d like a second set of eyes on your plan or help thinking through options, I’m always happy to provide guidance.

This is one of the most common misconceptions I hear from clients navigating a divorce.

In Maryland, courts do not automatically favor either parent. The standard is the best interest of the child, and that evaluation looks at a wide range of factors: each parent's relationship with the child, stability of the home environment, ability to co-parent, and more.

Fathers have just as much standing to seek custody as mothers. And mothers should not assume custody is a foregone conclusion. What matters most is what you can demonstrate about your relationship with your child and your ability to meet their needs.

If you have questions about how custody works in Maryland, I am happy to talk through your situation. Contact my office at (410) 657-2515 or email [email protected].
