I was happy to spend some time with Holly Draper discussing the nuances of amicus attorneys in family law cases. You can catch our conversation on her podcast here:

Today on the Texas Family Law Insiders podcast, we are sitting down with attorney Rocky Pilgrim. Rocky has been practicing law for over 18 years and owns Pilgrim Law Office, P.C., a family law firm with offices in Tomball and Richmond, Texas. “Here’s to the one time foster parent-

I want to acknowledge you because maybe the title “foster parent” doesn’t fit who you are anymore. You were a foster parent. You took in that one placement, and for whatever reason, now you are done.

I hope you know how much of an impact you made. I think there is this assumption around foster care that if you sign up- you’re a lifer. It’s what you do. It’s who you are. You’re a foster parent.

But we need more people like you. So many see the statistic that half of foster parents quit in the first year as a bad thing. And in some ways it is. And in other ways it’s a family that chose to step up for a season and wow- thank you for that season. Maybe more people would step up to be foster parents if we normalized this. If we allowed people the freedom to say yes and love a child fiercely and when the case closes, the foster family also does.

Because some of you adopted that child and are at capacity in your home. Some of you are supporting that biological family after reunification and it’s a part time job. Some of you stepped up for a particular child and family. Some of you had a change in your life and can no longer foster. Some of you are gutted by the system and it’s best for you to walk away.

Do we need serial foster families? Yes. We do. For the sake of there being “pros” for harder cases and less constant training and rotation for counties. But also- we need more one timers. More families to say yes to one child, one sibling set, one case, one family.

So to you, the one time foster parent. Thank you for taking a season of your life to step into this foster care world. Your title may no longer be foster parent but you and I both know you will never be the same.”

I've had some interest expressed regarding one's role as amicus attorney. Here is a link to the video of a presentation I gave to the Family Bar of Fort Bend in September 2020. While it does not go into all issues we face as amicus attorney, I hope it provides a helpful overview.

Please note this is the full presentation and while a CLE course number is presented, I cannot guarantee credit is still active (please check with the state bar if you have any questions regarding CLE credit).
