We are moving back to our old stomping grounds, just down the street, at 719 Sawdust. That is where it all started in 1996. During the 10 years I was there I moved from my original office into three progressively larger offices as we grew. In 2005 one of my developer clients approached me about moving to my current location at 314 Sawdust. With the promise of a custom built out space, an on site gym, and all kinds of other amenities, plus being across the hall from one of my larger clients, moving seemed a no brainer. But then the real estate market went bust and my client sold the building and went out of business, a bar moved into the complex, and all of a sudden, the mixed office/retail complex concept wasn't as attractive. So after 10 years at 314, we are moving back to where it all began. We are excited. I'll keep you posted.

If your tax return is simple (just a W-2, a couple of 1099's, and maybe some mortgage interest) maybe you can do it yourself. My father, a plumber always said, you can try to fix your own plumbing too. He said he got some of his best jobs when people tried to do their own work. I have too. I especially see people screw up their own returns when dealing with rental properties and charitable contributions. It might be worthwhile to allow a professional to review your return if you prepare it yourself. Following is the article that brought this line of thought to mind. http://www.accountingtoday.com/news/tax-practice/cleaning-up-the-mess-left-by-diy-tax-software-78079-1.html?utm_medium=email&ET=webcpa:e6707096:2533533a:&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=tax%20practice-may%2012%202016&st=email&eid=ab2c7ce587aee06363abcfdf6ddbf072

More and more taxpayers are turning towards do-it-yourself tax software to prepare and file business and individual income tax returns.

Beware of scammers. I just had the second client call me in a month saying someone from the IRS had called them saying they owed money and that if they didn't pay it immediately they would go to jail. First if you owe taxes, the IRS will never call you. Instead you will get several letters and if you ignore them, you might get a visit from an IRS officer with a badge. But they won't call you asking for money. Here is a link on what to do if you think you are being scammed. Let's be careful out there. https://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country. Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the…

I just found an ap I like to track business (and personal and commute) mileage. It tracks it on your smartphone. Much easier than keeping a journal. And it exports to Excel so you can fill in whatever blanks and make whatever changes you want. The only downside is it doesn't list locations by address, but for each trip you can write notes indicating the to and from. Is anyone else using anything different or better? https://www.mileiq.com/

“I love interacting with customers, so I spend my days in my truck, delivering beer throughout the Bay Area. My accountant is much happier with me now that I use MileIQ to verify all those miles and claim my full deduction. And I have more time for developing new recipes!”
