With Michael DelGiorno at KPYN radio in Atlanta this morning. We talked about what to do following an accident, and here are some key points:

1. Don't get upset. That doesn't help.
2. Talk with the other person and ask them what happened. They are more likely to be honest at the scene immediately following an accident and might say things like, "I'm sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going."
3. If you are the victim, make sure the police is called.
4. Take photos with your phone.
5. If you are having medical problems, seek immediate medical attention.
6. With the information that the officer will give you at the scene, call the other person's insurance company ASAP to open up a claim and get them started on assessing your property damage.
7. You can download a police report from txdot.gov, although it usually takes around 10 days for it to be posted.
8. Be sure to give all of your medical providers your health insurance information. You want them to bill your health insurance.
9. If you are the person at fault, DON'T try to deny it or blame the other person. Be honest with your insurance company. If it was your fault, OWN IT. For you to do otherwise may require the other party to hire an attorney, which will not help your insurance rates. Also, return all of the phone calls from your insurance adjuster and be cooperative. Again, your failure to do these things will make matters worse for you in the end.
