PUBLIC ROADWAY REMINDER

ATVs, side-by-sides, UTVs/ROVs, and golf carts are not automatically street-legal in Texas.

Texas law allows these vehicles on public roadways only in specific circumstances. Depending on the type of vehicle, location, route, and purpose, lawful operation may require a qualifying exception or local authorization, the proper license plate and safety equipment, and compliance with speed-limit, distance, time-of-day, and other restrictions.

An OHV or golf-cart plate, headlights, turn signals, or a slow-moving-vehicle emblem does not, by itself, authorize general recreational operation on public streets. Crossing a roadway is also not the same as traveling along it.

We are sharing this information to help our community understand the law and operate these vehicles safely. As with other traffic laws, Teague police officers may enforce these statutes when violations are observed. Our goal is voluntary compliance and safer roadways.

Before operating one of these vehicles on a public roadway, make sure your vehicle, route, and purpose meet every applicable requirement.

Relevant Texas Transportation Code provisions:

• §§ 551.301–551.304 and 551.401–551.405
• §§ 551A.051–551A.059

We are proud to see members of the Teague Police Department recognized in the 2026 Freestone County Best of the Best – Law Enforcement Officer category!

To everyone who took the time to cast a vote, thank you. Recognition like this means a great deal because it comes from the citizens our officers serve each day.

Our officers do not put on the badge for awards or attention. They do it because they care about this community and take seriously the responsibility entrusted to them. Still, knowing their hard work, professionalism, and service have been noticed and appreciated is certainly an honor.

We are proud of our officers, grateful for the continued support shown to our department, and thankful to be part of this community.
