Uninsured or underinsured motorist benefits:
Just today I met with a potential new client who was suffering from neck and back pain resulting from a rear end automobile collision that took place approximately one week earlier. Upon contacting the insurance company representing the at fault driver, I learned that he did not have bodily injury coverage upon which to make the claim for my potential clients injuries. In the event the at fault driver does not have bodily injury liability coverage, you can protect yourself by purchasing uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. In order to purchase this coverage on your auto policy you must purchase bodily injury liability coverage first. The uninsured motorist coverage provides a liability policy that protects you against the negligent acts of everyone on the road. The purchase of uninsured motorist coverage is not required by law, however, should be a priority for everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car as it will be the only policy of insurance that will provide you compensation for your injuries following an automobile accident for which you were not at fault.
I urge you to check your automobile insurance policy and check to see if it is there. If you do not have this coverage, I recommend you to contact your insurance company immediately and add uninsured motorist coverage.
Having to tell my potential client that there was no insurance coverage upon which to claim was literally adding insult to injury.
