As lawyers, sometimes our most significant victories are not big dramatic courtroom wins. Sometimes, the most meaningful successes are much less visible.
Today, I recevied one such win. My client's husband is incarcerated in prison. During a routine visit in a visitation area with numerous correctional staff, visitors, and inmates, one correction officer spontaneously accused them of nefarious activity. As a result, my client's visitation priviledges were terminated indefinitely.
It was patently absurd, and utterly impossible. Numerous other staff and visitors bravely came forward to speak the truth about the fabricated charge. We appealed the suspension, and that appeal was denied.
But we didn't quit. We appealed the denial as high as we could. Today, I received word that my client's priviledges have been reinstated, and she is free to visit her husband once again.
A small victory, perhaps. But not for the two people invovlved. For them, it is everything.
