Today, we remember.

We remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the countless acts of courage, sacrifice, and service that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember those we lost, to pray for the families who still carry that loss, and to give thanks for those who answered tragedy with extraordinary bravery.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” —Psalm 46:1

May we never forget. 🇺🇸

Freedom is one of our nation’s greatest blessings.

Today, we’re grateful for the men and women who have sacrificed to protect the liberties we enjoy as Americans. But as we celebrate Independence Day, may we also remember the greater freedom found only in Christ.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17

From all of us at DeWitt Law, have a safe, joyful, and blessed Fourth of July. 🇺🇸

In Florida, Board Certification is the highest level of recognition for an attorney’s competency and experience in a specific area of law — and less than 1% of Florida attorneys are Board Certified in Tax Law.

For me, this designation is about one thing: serving clients with excellence.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” — Colossians 3:23

Excellence is not a destination. It’s a daily commitment.

Most people know me as a lawyer. But before I’m an attorney, I’m a follower of Jesus Christ.

Your career is important, but it’s not your calling. Whether you’re in a courtroom, classroom, boardroom, or around the dinner table, God has placed you there to represent Him.

⚠️ The IRS may owe refunds to millions of taxpayers but the deadline to protect your rights is approaching.

A recent federal court decision, Kwong v. United States, could allow taxpayers to recover certain IRS penalties and interest assessed during the COVID disaster period.

The catch?

The IRS disagrees with the decision and is actively fighting it in court.

That means no one knows for certain how this will ultimately end. But waiting for the courts to finish may be a costly mistake.

Why? Because in many situations, taxpayers must file a protective refund claim before July 10, 2026 to preserve their rights.

If the courts ultimately rule in favor of taxpayers, those who failed to act before the deadline may lose their opportunity to recover anything, even if they would have otherwise qualified for a refund.

If you paid IRS penalties or interest between January 20, 2020, and July 10, 2023, it's worth finding out whether a protective claim makes sense in your situation.

The worst words in tax law aren't:

"You owe tax."

The worst words are:

"You had a claim, but you filed too late."

If justice only exists for innocent people, then justice doesn't really exist at all.

The measure of a justice system isn't how it treats the innocent. It's how it treats the guilty.

Every person deserves due process, dignity, and justice.

The greatest Advocate who ever lived stood for people who were undeniably guilty.

People like me.

People like you.

That's why justice matters.

Most people get three things wrong about the United States Tax Court:

1️⃣ It is NOT part of the IRS.

2️⃣ It is the only court where you can challenge many IRS assessments without paying the tax first.

3️⃣ If you receive a Notice of Deficiency, you generally have just 90 days to file a Tax Court petition.

That third mistake destroys cases.

I've seen taxpayers lose valuable rights because they assumed there was an extension, thought their accountant was handling it, or simply didn't appreciate the significance of the deadline.

One more thing most people don't know: although the U.S. Tax Court is headquartered in Washington, D.C., its judges travel the country and conduct trials in cities across the United States.

Tax controversy is not just about knowing the Internal Revenue Code. It's about evidence, strategy, procedure, negotiation, and understanding how a case will look if it ultimately ends up before a judge.
