Some cases can only be resolved by a judge. Most cases should not.

Before you give up on settlement talks you need to understand that the courtroom will give you an outcome. The courtroom won’t give you closure.

A family law judge can divide your assets, determine support, and set a parenting schedule. The courtroom is not designed to resolve the emotions that come with the end of a marriage.

A judge’s job is to make legal decisions, not to help you feel heard, understood, vindicated, or at peace with what happened.

It is important for you not to view your divorce as a win-or-lose proposition. Every battle has a cost, and sometimes the cost of “winning” one issue can outweigh the benefit.

Emotions are an important part of the divorce process, but they should not drive decisions with long-term consequences. One of the goals of mediation is to help parties separate the emotion of the moment from the decisions that will shape their future.
