A crash on SR-54 in Pasco County is a reminder that being injured while working is not always “just” a workers’ compensation issue.

According to FHP, a trooper was stopped at a traffic signal on eastbound SR-54 near Northpointe Parkway when an 18-year-old driver rear-ended his patrol vehicle. The trooper was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

When someone is hurt on the job, workers’ compensation may help cover medical treatment and lost wages. But when a third party, like another driver, causes the injury, there may also be a separate personal injury claim.

That matters.

Workers’ comp and personal injury claims are not the same. A personal injury claim may address damages that workers’ comp often does not fully cover, including pain, suffering, and the full impact the crash has on someone’s life.

If you were injured while working because another driver caused a crash, do not assume workers’ comp is your only option.

Armando Personal Injury Law is currently reviewing fatal 7-OH and kratom-related wrongful death cases, & Florida is taking emergency action against concentrated 7-OH products, and families deserve to understand why.

7-OH is not just “strong kratom.” These products may carry serious opioid-like risks, especially when mixed with alcohol, allergy medication, sleep aids, prescription medication, or other substances.

If your loved one died after using a 7-OH, Kratom extract, gummy, tablet, shot, or similar Kratom product, preserve the packaging, receipts, toxicology records, and medical documents before someone throws away the one thing that could actually matter.

Drivers across Tampa Bay should use caution after multiple crashes were reported today in Hillsborough County and Pinellas County, including several injury crashes, roadblocks, and a hit-and-run crash with injuries.

In Hillsborough County, reported incidents included:

I-275 NB near MM39 in Tampa — crash with injuries
I-75 SB near MM273 in Lutz — hit-and-run crash with injuries and roadblock
Sun City Center Blvd and Cortaro Dr in Sun City Center — vehicle crash

In Pinellas County, reported incidents included:

Howard Frankland Bridge eastbound / I-275 in St. Petersburg — crash with injuries and roadblock
US-19 and Curlew Rd in Clearwater — vehicle crash
54th Ave N and Haines Rd N in St. Petersburg — crash with injuries and reported roadblock

Drivers in Tampa, Lutz, Sun City Center, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater should expect delays and watch for emergency responders, especially where injuries or roadblocks were reported. Because apparently even crossing the bay now needs a risk assessment and a prayer.

If you or a loved one was hurt in a Tampa Bay crash, get medical attention promptly, document what you can, and be careful when speaking with insurance companies.

When someone is seriously injured because of another person’s carelessness, they should have a fair chance to recover what they need to move forward.

But in Florida, when the responsible party is a government employee or agency, the rules are different.

Right now, Florida’s sovereign immunity law limits many claims against government entities to $200,000 per person and $300,000 per incident. For someone facing surgeries, permanent injuries, lost income, long-term treatment, or the loss of a loved one, those limits may not come close to covering the real impact.

A proposed change would raise those limits to $350,000 per person and $500,000 per incident for qualifying claims going forward.

That increase would be a step in the right direction.

It would help injured citizens and families seek more accountability when harm is caused by a careless or reckless government driver, public employee, agency, department, or unsafe public property.

But we still believe this falls short of what injured individuals and families may truly need and deserve.

A serious injury does not become less costly because the at-fault person works for the government. Medical bills still add up. Time away from work still hurts families. Permanent injuries still change lives. Grief after a wrongful death still leaves families carrying a burden that no cap can fully measure.

This proposed increase matters, but Florida families deserve a system that fully recognizes the real cost of preventable harm.

If you or someone you love was injured in a crash or incident involving a government vehicle, city, county, state agency, public employee, school district, or public property, speak with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible. These cases have special rules, notice requirements, and strict deadlines.
