Last year, a Tampa police chase ended when a car tragically crashed into Bradley’s on 7th in Ybor City. Four people were killed, and another 21 were injured.

Now, one of the injured parties is fighting back against the driver — and the City of Tampa and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The lawsuit blames city departments for pursuing the chase that led to the accident.

Over the last four years, 40 people have died in police pursuits in Florida. This case will raise questions of when police should pursue high-speed chases and what type of compensation might be due to parties injured when police chases go wrong.

They'll say they just want to "get your statement" or "start processing your claim."

But should you talk to them?

The short answer: No.

Do not give a detailed statement to any insurance company after an auto accident without speaking to an attorney first.

You must report the incident to your own insurer, but you do not have to give a full statement.

Wait to give a detailed recorded statement until after you've spoken with an attorney. Let your attorney review your policy and advise you on exactly what your cooperation obligation requires.

If you saw the Tony Romo DUI arrest video, something might have caught your attention.

During the DUI stop, Romo asked if he could call his attorney.

He seemed surprised that the police officer didn’t allow him to make the call.

But the officer wasn’t doing anything wrong.

While you can ask to call your attorney during an arrest, most officers won’t allow you. You do not have a right to call an attorney during an arrest.

You do have the right to remain silent and only speak once you have an attorney after you have been booked.
