The purpose of the Section is to work in cooperation with the The Florida Bar Board of Governors, and under its supervision, accomplish the aims and purposes of The Florida Bar within the field of labor and employment law. The Section actively sponsors the continuing education of the members of The Florida Bar in the

field of labor and employment law. The Section encourages members of the Section interested in the problems of management and labor throughout the state to meet and confer, through this Section, upon their various problems and, through such cooperation, to promote justice. REMINDER: The Florida Bar annual fee season is underway with the traditional option to pay online by signing in to member.floridabar.org and clicking the “Pay My Fees” button.

Fees may be paid via credit card or e-check. Online payment is the quickest and easiest way to pay your annual fees, elect voluntary section memberships, and stay in compliance with Bar rules for trust accounting and pro bono reporting.

Fees remain at $265 for active members and $175 for inactive members.

Just published in the May/June issue of The Florida Bar Journal: "External Law in Labor Arbitration: Wait — There’s More Than the Collective Bargaining Agreement To Consider?" by Labor and Employment Law Section members Heidi Parker, Hackman Parker, LLC, and Christopher Shulman, Shulman ADR Law, P.A.

The article explores many of the ways in which external law plays a role in labor arbitration. To start, a short overview of the jurisdictional background and bases for application of external law. Then, a discussion of various applications of external law, considering the external law’s impact on both the merits of the grievances arbitrated and the remedies an arbitrator may (and in some cases, must) award, in the event a grievance is sustained.

As even the casual observer will note, arbitration of labor and employment matters is here to stay. Many readers of this article, including members of The Florida Bar Labor and Employment Law Section, are familiar with arbitration of employment claims, typically arising out of predispute agreements....
