Wednesday Wisdom: Sat Cito Si Recte - “Soon Enough if Done Rightly”

Sat Cito Si Recte (pronounced saht see-to see rayk-yay), which means “Soon enough if done Rightly.” We are sometimes impatient about how long it takes a judge to decide a case, but it is more important for the decision to be RIGHT than for it to be fast.

Myth Monday with Momo:

I can appeal my case whenever I want.

The truth: All appeals have a deadline. The order you want to appeal should tell you when the deadline is (often it is 30 days, but sometimes it is shorter). Also, in most family law cases you can’t appeal without a transcript of your hearing. This means that if you didn’t have a court reporter and the hearing wasn’t recorded, your appeal will probably be denied.

Today's word(s) is "Child Support Guidelines."

Florida uses Child Support Guidelines to calculate child support. In most cases, the income of the parents, the cost of daycare, and the cost of health insurance are plugged into an Excel spreadsheet that does the calculations automatically.

Myth Monday: Child support ends when my child turns 18.

Truth: If your child turns 18 and is still in high school and expected to graduate before turning 19, child support continues until the child graduates. Child support may also continue after the child turns 18 if the child is disabled.

Ready for a little Lunch and Learn for Word Wednesday?!

Today's Word is "Indigence" or "Civil Indigence."

“Civil Indigence” is a fancy term for poverty. In family law cases, some fees, like court filing fees, can be waived for people who are indigent. In Florida courts, someone is indigent if they earn less than twice the Federal poverty level and meet other qualifications based on assets and liabilities. For example, in a household with one person, the poverty line is $15,060 and indigence would be $30,120. You can find the 2024 poverty guidelines at

It's a Math Myth Monday!
Myth: If I make $1,000 biweekly, I make $2,000 a month, which is $24,000 a year.

Truth: Seems right, but it's wrong! If you make $1,000 biweekly, then you get paid $1,000 every two weeks. There are 52 weeks in a year, which means you get 26 paychecks a year (not 24). So you're really making $26,000 a year! To figure out what you make monthly, divide $26,000 by 12 months = $2,166.67 per month.
