The Umpqua National Forest is home to the Indigo (https://www.dfw.state.or.us/Wolves/Counties/Douglas.asp) pack of wolves. Lately, a yearling in the pack is showing a lack of wariness around people which is uncommon behavior. Videos and photos show this wolf approaching and laying down near vehicles and not reacting to human voice or honking horns. ODFW has trapped and collared the yearling wolf to track its movements. Additionally, OR-125 is a collared two-year-old male dispersed from the Indigo Pack and has been seen at times with the yearling wolf. It also displays a lack of wariness.
The behavior of these two wolves can be a safety risk for people and their pets. Dog owners should leash their pets as wolves are territorial with other canines. ODFW, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Umpqua National Forest advise people to follow these safety tips. Please also report aggressive or unusual wolf behavior directly to ODFW.
