At immigration interviews, officers are doing more than just checking boxes - they’re getting a feel for who our clients are. While we always hope they’ve reviewed every document submitted, the truth is, you never really know what they’ve focused on until the questions start.

And those questions? They’re just as important as the answers. They offer insight into what the officer is really interested in.

During a recent interview, the officer asked about… pets. Yes, pets! That’s the dream scenario. When the most pressing question is, “What kind of cat do you have?” it usually means everything else is in order. The interview becomes more of a formality than a hurdle.

Family Law Orders: time to move on and be judgments, or just start there.

We often collect on family law cases. Unpaid spousal support, sanctions sprinkled across a case, etc. Far too commonly the ORDERS that come from a case award some amount of money, but are not considered JUDGMENTS.

"Petitioner is awarded $500. Respondent shall pay $500 to Petitioner within 10 days." Something like this will be scrawled in barely legible cursive on the last page of an 8 year old order. And there it will sit forever because it is nearly impossible for it to be remembered by the Client and similarly impossible for it to be found amongst a sea of orders unless we have a reason to look (and ideally the reason shouldn't be - because orders are badly written).

It is understandable that the award wants to give time to pay, which is why CR 62 already has a 10 day automatic extension: "no ex*****on shall issue upon a judgment nor shall proceedings be taken for its enforcement until the expiration of 10 days after its entry."

Insist on getting the orders to be judgments unless you just want to assume that it will never be paid.
